For most homes across Sydney, we recommend a professional clean every 6–12 months. That said, the right interval depends on where you live and what your roof is exposed to.
What Affects Your Cleaning Schedule
- Proximity to the coast — salt air accelerates residue build-up
- Nearby trees — pollen, sap and leaf litter settle faster near foliage
- Bird activity — droppings are one of the most common causes of localised output loss
- Road dust and traffic — properties on busier roads tend to need more frequent attention
- Roof pitch and orientation — flatter roofs collect more debris than steeply pitched ones
Signs Your Panels Need Cleaning Sooner
- A noticeable drop in your system’s reported output
- Visible dirt, patchy marks or bird droppings on the panel surface
- It’s been over 12 months since your last professional service
Why Not Just Wait for Rain?
Rain removes loose dust but doesn’t touch salt residue, bird droppings or baked-on grime — all of which continue to affect performance regardless of rainfall. (We cover this in more detail in our post on whether rain cleans solar panels.)
